Example from the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014:

„Duty to assess the needs of a child for care and support
(1) Where it appears to a local authority that a child may need care and support in  addition to, or instead of, the care and support provided by the child’s family, the authority must assess
(a) whether the child does need care and support of that kind, and
(b) if the child does, what those needs are.”

Example from the Social Security (Medical Evidence) and Statutory Sick Pay (Medical Evidence) (Amendment) Regulations 2010:

„a statement that the doctor will or, as the case may be will not, need to assess the patient’s fitness for work again”

Example from Solicitors Act 1974:

„Where before the expiration of one month from the delivery of a solicitor’s bill an application is made by the party chargeable with the bill, the High Court shall, without requiring any sum to be paid into court, order that the bill be assessed and that no action be commenced on the bill until the assessment is completed.”

Example from the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016:

„The report must in particular—
(a) set out the objectives intended to be achieved by the regulatory provisions,
(b) assess the extent to which those objectives are achieved,
(c) assess whether those objectives remain appropriate, and
(d) if those objectives remain appropriate, assess the extent to which they could be achieved in another way which involves less onerous regulatory provisions”

Example from the Civil Contingencies Act 2004:

„A person or body listed in Part 1 or 2 of Schedule 1 shall—
(a) from time to time assess the risk of an emergency occurring,
(b) from time to time assess the risk of an emergency making it necessary or expedient for the person or body to perform any of his or its functions,
(c) maintain plans for the purpose of ensuring, so far as is reasonably practicable, that if an emergency occurs the person or body is able to continue to perform his or its functions,”

Example from the Criminal Procedure Rules 2015:

„(7) If the court makes an order, it may direct an assessment under rule 45.11, or assess the amount itself where—
(a) the appellant abandons an appeal to the Crown Court;
(b) the Crown Court decides an appeal, except an appeal under—
(i) section 108 of the Magistrates’ Courts Act 1980, or
(ii) section 45 of the Mental Health Act 1983; or
(c) the Court of Appeal decides an appeal to which Part 40 applies (Appeal to the Court of Appeal about reporting or public access restriction).
(8) If the court makes an order in any other case, it must assess the amount itself.”

Example from Arbitration (International Investment Disputes) Act 1966:

„In the case of arbitration proceedings the Tribunal shall, except as the parties otherwise agree, assess the expenses incurred by the parties in connection with the proceedings, and shall decide how and by whom whose expenses, the fees and expenses of the members of the Tribunal and the charges for the use of the facilities of the Centre shall be paid. Such decision shall form part of the award.”
